Photonics is an enabling technology. Applications are available in, e.g., medical and healthcare; telecommunication, data communication, and data storage; consumer electronics; manufacturing; and diagnostics. In the 21st century, century for photonics, we will see how optics enables virtual reality/augmented reality, ever faster data transmission, foldable display, etc. Commercialization innovation in photonics is an opportunity, but it faces similar challenges as any high-tech product. Besides, optics industry is highly conservative.
