Metamaterials: why and how they are not materials
Abstract

I will provide a brief conceptual introduction to the idea of metamaterials on conceptual level, and thereafter discuss the difference between observable properties of finite metamaterial samples in comparison to effective medium theory predictions. We will thus see how long a way towards materials is.
