Laser processing of materials for photonics: direct laser writing & few-pulse ablation
Abstract

High-energy femtosecond laser pulses interact differently with the materials compared to continuous-wave laser sources. The capability to deliver high amounts of energy in short period of time allows to induce non-thermal material removal – ablation. Such material processing method is highly feasible for defining patterns in temperature-sensitive materials, such as lead halide perovskites, however the number of pulses reaching the sample should be limited to avoid sample overheating. Few-pulse ablation will be demonstrated as a method for fabrication of thin-film perovskite microdisk lasers. Multiple-pulse laser-induced heating will be demonstrated as a feasible tool for local modification of materials, allowing to define 2D patterns with high spatial resolution and precise exposure control.
High intensities of ultrashort pulses give rise to nonlinear processes, such as two-photon absorption (TPA). TPA allows modifying materials with high spatial localization in all three dimensions, thus providing a tool for three-dimensional microfabrication with sub-micron resolution. The application of auxiliary microtools for optical trapping fabricated by DLW will be demonstrated.
