PhD student in 2D materials nanophotonics

Faculty of Physics of ITMO University is searching for a PhD student to conduct experimental research in the area of nanophotonics based on two-dimensional van-der-Waals materials. The candidate will study polaritonic, quantum optical, and nonlinear effects arising due to light–matter interaction in nanophotonic resonators integrated with 2D materials. The project is at the border of optics, condensed matter physics, nanotechnology, and materials science. The PhD program starts in September 2022, but we can hire the successful candidate and integrate him/her into the research project earlier – contact Dr. Vasily Kravtsov (vasily.kravtsov at metalab.ifmo.ru) for details. We also encourage applications from abroad and will help with the relocation process.

Responsibilities

The candidate will:

  • conduct experimental research in an optical laboratory using modern femtosecond lasers, cryostats, spectrometers, time-correlated photon counting systems, etc.;
  • design, assemble, and optimize experimental optical schemes and participate in the development of new measurement techniques;
  • participate in the fabrication of 2D materials and nanophotonic structures;
  • analyze experimental data, present results at seminars/conferences and publish papers in peer-reviewed journals;
  • take part in the numerical modelling of 2D materials-based structures and studied optical effects;
  • teach lab courses to undergraduate students;
  • supervise students’ lab projects;
  • apply for grants, fellowships, and awards;
  • supervise a student.

Requirements

  • Undergraduate degree in physics/chemistry/mathematics.
  • Good grades in relevant courses.
  • Previous experience with experimental research (preferably optics).
  • Previous experience of conference/seminar presentation.
  • Basic programming skills; experience with Matlab or related software.
  • English at the B1 (Intermediate) level or higher.
  • Proactive attitude and good decision-making skills.
  • Systematic thinking.
  • Ability to independently plan your work, ask for feedback and improve your results.
  • Experience with publishing in peer-reviewed journals will be a plus.

Conditions

  • Young and professional team of Faculty employees, friendly environment;
  • Strong corporate culture at the Faculty: weekly volleyball with colleagues, table tennis, New Year's corporate party, English courses, etc;
  • Continuous development, fast professional growth and opportunity to move forward;
  • Participation in the preparation and writing papers published in highly ranked journals;
  • Interaction with acclaimed experts in subject areas;
  • Opportunity to propose ideas and be heard;
  • Corporate English classes for the employees;
  • Work in the historic center of St. Petersburg;
  • Annual paid leave;
  • Social package: official employment, holidays in the corporate country recreation center, activities and events for employees and their children, etc.
