Controlling and utilizing optical whispering gallery modes on a surface of optical fibers

Abstract
A standard optical fiber may serve as a cylindrical microresonator for optical whispering gallery modes. Here we discuss ways to control axial propagation of the modes by shaping the fibers with heating, bending, or by utilizing a fiber cleave. We also briefly review possible applications of such microresonators.
