Wave propagation in hierarchical porous materials and multiscale acoustic metamaterials
Abstract

This seminar discusses wave propagation in hierarchical porous materials and multiscale metamaterials, which feature structural elements with characteristic sizes spanning from nanometres to millimetres and beyond. We examine the effective acoustic properties of two classes of systems:

  • Hierarchical sorptive porous materials, where adsorption and diffusion processes strongly influence wave behaviour;
  • Multiscale acoustic metamaterials, combining porous media with resonant structures to tailor acoustic responses.

Throughout the presentation, we highlight how various physical mechanisms - such as fluid-solid interactions, diffusion, and nanoscale adsorption/desorption- determine the acoustic behaviour of these systems. The seminar concludes with a discussion of our ongoing research on wave propagation in multiscale poroelastic media.
