In the second issue of the planned research stories, I will address the early history and fundamental basics of metamaterials as artificial magnetics. This includes the development of effective medium theory, strong lattice effects, as well as resulting applications. Both resonant and non-resonant systems are considered.
Specifically, I will now address the following topics:
1. Effective medium theory for artificial magnetics
2. Tunable properties through lattice modification
3. Artificial diamagnetics
4. (time permitting) Specific effects in the systems of finite size
As usual, there is a range of open questions and possibilities for future projects, which we will discuss.
